So for the history of the Model 520, let’s start at the beginning.ġ903-1909: John Browning filed a patent for a “hammerless” shotgun w/ a unique take-down barrel and locking breech block on, it was approved on and along with a separate patent, that applies to the connection between the slide arm and the fore end, became the Stevens 520. Based off my research and collection of serial numbers, I also estimate that approximately 100,000 520As were made between 1940-1948 (including WWII 520-30 production). I believe there were around 100,000 more produced as store branded guns between 1932-39. It is stated that about 191,000 were made and I now believe that this only covers production through about 1932. I have been building a serial number reference based on all the examples that I observe and it has allowed me to refine the information provided below concerning design changes. This destroyed much of the information concerning production of these shotguns. Stevens had an accidental fire in their records room right after WWI when they were being investigated for war profiteering and there was a great flood of the Connecticut River in 1936 that damaged the factory and records room again. Here’s a great video about the unique takedown on these shotguns from Deadwood Dick, it features a 620 but the action is the same.
